This is what Champagne from Reims used to be like 100 years ago, Francis Egly told us, before timid winemakers started cutting their cuves with Chardonnay. This single-vineyard Champagne from the noblest of terroirs in Ambonnay is 100% Pinot Noir from 70-year-old vines; the wine spends 51 months on its lees, and is fermented in barrel. “Crayeres” covers itself with the thinest of Champagne soil, yet its heart is pure, solid chalk. The nose is a sensual feastcinnamon and cardamom; the zest of lemons and limes; candied ginger, cherries and crushed stones. Lush and almost thick on the palate, “Crayeres” shows notes of currants and strawberries, reminding of a still red wine. This is truly the benchmark for all great Pinot Noir Champagneperhaps for all Champagne.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: The latest release of Egly-Ouriet’s emblematic NV Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Les Crayres was disgorged in July 2019 with three grams per liter dosage after 72 months on the lees. It’s based on the 2012 vintage complemented by 40% reserve wines from 2011. The wine is showing brilliantly, unfurling in the glass with scents of crisp yellow and green orchard fruit, honeycomb, and praline; it’s full-bodied, deep, and searingly incisive, with a tighter-knit, more tensile core than last the 2018 disgorgement (a 2011-2010 blend). Concentrated and impeccably balanced, with a delicate pinpoint mousse and a long, chalky finish, this is another magical Champagne from this beacon of artisanal winemaking. While the 2018 disgorgement was amazingly inviting on release, this new release will really reward at least a few years’ patience.
- Vinous: The NV Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Crayeres Grand Cru explodes from the glass with a range of Pinot aromas and flavors that is just breathtaking. Bright acids and beams of saline intensity offer a striking contrast. Even though it has just been Disgorged: the Crayeres is just stunning. For readers who want to know what Pinot from Ambonnay tastes like, well, this is it. Hints of Mirabelle plum, red plum, and dried flowers linger on the substantial finish.
Producer Information
Domaine Egly-Ouriet Champagne is sensual, unforgettable and highly sought after, cult grower Champagne producer. Egly’s practice of harvesting very ripe grapes and aging in barrel for years longer than almost any other Champagne house are some of the practices that set his art apart from the rest. Egly-Ouriet Champagne is age-worthy, sumptuous and at times surreal; these bottles are unquestionably the pinnacle of Pinot Noir-based Champagne.
