The 2020 Meursault Les Perrires 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with crushed pebbles, granite and pressed white flower scents that unfurl in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a tensile opening, taut and fresh, quite saline with a cohesive and persistent finish.

        • Wine Advocate: The 2020 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrires (Domaine Louis Jadot) is also excellent, unwinding in the glass with scents of citrus zest, crisp green orchard fruit, vanilla pod and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and chiseled, it’s racy and incisive, with a tangy spine of acidity and a long, searingly chalky finish. The 2020 vintage has turned out beautifully at this address, delivering concentrated, flavorful wines with alcohol levels between 13.3% and 13.7% and with low pHs. Winemaker Frdric Barnier told me that efforts were made to pick earlier in the day, and that fruit waiting to be processed was kept fresh in a special cold room. In the cellar, foudres and 500-liter barrels now complement classic 228-liter pices, a further evolution adapting to warmer, riper vintages. But aside from the quality of the 2020s and these technical developments, described in more detail in the accompanying tasting notes, there’s other noteworthy news too: in 2021, Jadot entered into organic conversion for their domaine vineyards.
        • Burghound: Elegant, pure and very restrained aromas include those of mineral reduction, Granny Smith apples, lemon-lime and a plenitude of floral elements. There is first-rate intensity to the refined if exceptionally intense middle weight flavors that brim with an almost pungent minerality on the linear, bone-dry and citrus pith-inflected finish. Note that this is very tightly wound and is definitely a wine where at least moderate patience should be most beneficial.

        Producer Information

Louis Jadot is one of Burgundy’s most important wine producers and ngociants, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with a portfolio that covers everything from inexpensive Bourgogne and Beaujolais wines to several grand cru wines, from the Cte de Beaune to Chablis. Unsurprisingly, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay feature heavily in the portfolio. The house was founded in Beaune in 1859 by Louis Jadot, although the first vineyard Clos de Ursules was purchased in the 1820s. The headquarters remains in Beaune, although vineyard holdings have increased exponentially. Louis Jadot owns land in some of Burgundy’s most famous vineyards, including Le Musigny, chezeaux, Chapelle-Chambertin and in the famously fragmented Clos de Vougeot vineyard. Louis Jadot wines are also made in Chambertin, Montrachet, Corton and Romane-Saint-Vivant. As well as the sizeable portfolio of wines made under the Louis Jadot label itself, the house also makes wines for Domaine du Duc de Magenta, and for Domaine Gagey. Andre Gagey took over as general manager for Louis Jadot in 1968 and, along with winemaker Jacques Lardire, was often held responsible for building Jadot’s high reputation in the 70s and 80s. The firm was acquired in 1985 by the owners of US wine importer Kobrand, which still owns the company and imports Jadot’s wines into the US. Gagey, whose son Pierre-Henry Gagey took over as president in 1991, died in 1999 and Lardire retired in 2012. Frdric Barnier, who joined the company in 2010, has since taken over as head winemaker. Thibault Gagey has since joined his father Pierre-Henry at the helm of the firm. Jadot is also strongly associated with its in-house cooperage and barrel brand, Cadus, which was established in 1996 in the village Ladoix-Serrigny (just outside Beaune) in cooperation with barrel firm Tonnellerie Vicard. In 2013, Vicard sold its stake in the operation to independent French stave mill Canadell.
