The wine deepens and expands across the palate as its layers unfold then changes course becoming sleek and mineral with a fine line of focused acidity and gravelly tannin. Theres a lovely echo of deep fruit on the finish. This is a wine that you can enjoy on release, but it also offers the potential for a decade of positive aging in bottle.

• Wine Advocate: The 2020 Pinot Noir Wester Reach is one of Dumol’s larger cuves, and production was normal despite the challenges of the vintage (3,750 cases). It has alluring purity on the nose, with scents of cranberries, rhubarb, tobacco leaves, orange peel and aniseed. The medium-bodied palate is concentrated and powerful without losing detail, framed by powdery tannins and refreshing acidity. It offers an array of spice and floral accents on the finish. Lovely!

DuMOL is an acclaimed and sought-after small producer based in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley in California. It makes a selection of site-expressive wines from the Russian River and Sonoma Coast predominantly from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Small lots of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and (probably most unusually) Mencia are also grown and produced from top vineyard sites in Sonoma and Napa.The business is based in Windsor, nine miles north of Santa Rosa. There are currently six estate vineyards, and over two decades DuMOL has developed strong relations with some of the state’s top growers to source or farm fruit on contract from over 20 further sites.Most of the wines are single-vineyard bottlings. These are released via allocations to DuMOL’s consumer mailing list and to select restaurants around the world.
