Generally beloved by sommeliers all over, Graillot’s Crozes-Hermitage is the benchmark representation for Syrah from this appellation. Generally medium to full-bodied, the wine brims with lush and slightly tannic notes of ripe plum skin, black currants, crushed fennel seed, and aromatic notes of violet flower and smoked black tea. Simply put: if you love Syrah, you will love this wine.
Reviews:
- Vinous: Spice-driven dark berry, cherry, peony and licorice aromas are sharpened by a zesty mineral flourish. Fleshy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors turn sweeter with air and pick up a smoky nuance on the back half. Shows fine definition and energy and finishes spicy and quite long, displaying gently chewy tannins and a resonating floral quality.
- The Wine Advocate: Atypically big, rich and velvety, the 2019 Crozes Hermitage emanates from a vintage whose yields were cut in half by hail. Bottled in March 2021, it delivers rolling waves of ripe black cherries, tinged with understated herbal notes and a long, luxuriously textured finish.
Producer Information
Alain Graillot left a career in agro-chemicals in 1985 to follow a dream with a rented parcel of vines, on the site of a former pig farm, on the Chassis plateau between Tain l’Hermitage and Pont l’Isre in the appellation of Crozes-Hermitage in the Northern Rhne. Today the Domaine has a reputation for being one of the leading Crozes-Hermitage growers and having trained many more vignerons who have taken Alain’s expertise and winemaking philosophy to heart. That includes Alain’s sons Antoine and Maxime who together have run the domaine somewhat interchangeably for the last couple of decades. Alain passed away in 2022 but Domaine Alain Graillot remains one of the most widely respected producers in the Rhne valley and their wines grace the lists of France’s finest restaurants. The Graillot philosophy is as simple as it is successful to produce appealing, sensibly-priced wines that people will want to drink.
