        Reviews:

        • Wine Advocate: The 1988’s deep ruby/purple color exhibits more opaqueness and depth than the 1989. The spicy, mineral and cassis-scented bouquet has more focus and dimension. In the mouth, there is an elevated level of tannins, in keeping with the style of the 1988 vintage, but unlike many 1988s, this wine possesses excellent, even outstanding concentration, plenty of length, and a sense that the yields were kept conservative, as there is an inner strength and depth that suggests this wine will ultimately outperform and outlive the 1989.
        • Wine Spectator: Chocolate and blackberry character on the nose, with hints of tobacco. Medium to full bodied, with slightly chewy tannins and a medium finish. A little dry, but some very pretty fruit underneath.

        Producer Information

Chteau Canon is a Premier Grand Cru Class chteau in Saint-milion, Bordeaux. It owns pockets of vineyards close to Saint-milion town, with a large core parcel right on the very edge. This parcel is almost completely walled in and is traditionally hand-harvested and ploughed by horses. It is planted entirely with Merlot. This is regularly used in the Chteau Canon grand vin, along with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc from the estate’s various other vineyards. More than 60 percent of Canon’s vineyards are planted to Merlot. The remaining is planted to Cabernet Franc. The grapes are blended carefully to get the most from each: Merlot brings smoothness, finesse and intense fruit aromas; while Cabernet Franc brings structure and extra ability to age. The Chteau also makes the Croix Canon wine from an 11-hectare (27-acre) vineyard that borders the Canon estate. Buyers should be aware of the high number of wines from the Right Bank whose names include the word “Canon”. This includes two distinct wines named Chteau Canon from Canon-Fronsac, one of which has a very similar label to this more famous wine.
