The 2021 Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese by Egon Mller is spectacularly successful. Even if the bouquet is still very reserved when young, it is clearly recognizable as a Scharzhofberger with its herbal, slate nose. The Auslese is creamy on the palate and shows a lot of aromas of pineapple, with some ripe mango and dried apricots. The delicate, mature and yet gripping acidity brings tension to the wine, although it is well integrated. Expressive and perfectly balanced, the high extract buffers, delicate play of aromas with salty-crystalline minerality shows the enormous potential of the wine. A wine for eternity!

But woe betide if another 20, 30 years (and if you still have the time and patience, 50 years and more) have passed…then will we have an Auslese in the glass that can seamlessly join the series of grandiose wines of the century – perhaps the rebirth of the legendary 1921? Time will tell, but one thing is certain: this Auslese will easily outlast us all!

• Moselle Fine Wines: The 2021er Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese is a sweet wine made from botrytized fruit. It proves still rather reduced and needs a few minutes in the glass to reveal a stunningly clean nose of fresh orchard fruits, a hint of pineapple, and glorious notes of minty herbs and spices. The wine is still a touch firm on the zingy and incredibly playful palate and leaves a stunning note of fresh fruits and proves full of finesse. The combination of intensity, precision, and utter zesty-fruity balance is simply to die for. This is clearly a modern-day classic in the making.

Producer Information

Weingut Egon Mller is a renowned wine estate based just outside the village of Wiltingen in the Saar valley sub-region of the Mosel in Germany. It exclusively works with the Riesling grape, and is particularly known for its wines made from the exceptional Scharzhofberg vineyard southeast of Wiltingen. The current manager is Egon Mller IV, who studied his craft at the leading winemaking university at Geisenheim. The Egon Mller wines are produced at a range of ripeness levels, including Kabinett, Sptlese and Auslese, with Auslese Goldkapsel (literally “gold capsule”) made in the best years. If conditions allow, sweet Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein are also produced. The estate in its present form dates back to 1797, when Jean-Jacques Koch acquired the Scharzhof farm from the French republic. His daughter married Felix Mller, and the estate has remained in the same family ownership ever since. Egon Mller also produces top-class Riesling with Miroslav Petrech in Slovakia under the Chteau Bel label. In the Adelaide Hills region of Australia he collaborates with Michael Andrewarta of East End Cellars to make the dry Kanta Riesling from a vineyard owned by Shaw + Smith.
