Sweet Wine: 1976 | Riveyrac | Rivesaltes

Rivesaltes has a lucid mahogany color. The wine has an airier bouquet that does not quite possess the depth of older vintages: burnt toffee, ginger, a touch spirituous as it opens in the glass. The palate is well balanced. Yuzu and ginger mixed with honeyed tones and toffee, gently opening out on the well-defined finish. Ends very elegantly, encouraging another sip.

        • Neal Martin: The 1976 Rivesaltes Riveyrac has an airier bouquet that does not quite possess the depth of older vintages: burnt toffee, ginger, a touch spirituous as it opens in the glass. The palate is well balanced. I like the citrus thread here, yuzu and ginger mixed with honeyed tones and toffee, gently opening out on the well-defined finish. Ends very elegantly, encouraging another sip.
        • Nicholas Jackson: Sweet, fortified wine from the small town of Rivesaltes, near Perpignan, a few miles inland of the Mediterranean in deep southern France. The fruit remains concentrated with good freshness, as well as some dried fruit notes.

        Producer Information

The wines of Riveyrac come from the Salses-le-Chteau co-operative cellar. It is one of the oldest co-operative cellars in the Pyrnes-Orientales department, founded by eight growers on 22nd January 1909, uniting against adverse circumstances during one of the worst viticultural crises in the region’s history. Ideally located on the old Roman Via Domitia (which intersects here with the A9 motorway), it also sits in the shadow of the fortifications of the Chteau de Salses, built by 15th-century Spanish Catholic kings as a frontier-post against the kingdom of France (the Pyrnes-Orientales only became part of France during the reign of Louis XIV). Between the two world wars, the cellar specialised in the great red AOC Rivesaltes vins doux naturels, whose sales grew steadily year on year: they were matured for around ten years in foudre, barrique and demi-muid barrels before being sold to the rich merchants from the neighbouring village of Rivesaltes.
